Hi
Your March 2018 SMU CIRCLE Alumni Newsletter is here!
At Office of Alumni Relations, we are constantly improving our content based on your valuable feedback. To enhance your reading experience, the following changes have been made to March's issue, based on a survey conducted with alumni:
- Monthly thematic issues
- Editorial Foreword or Feature Article instead of "Highlights to Upcoming Events"
- Final listing of "Past Events" in SMU CIRCLE
The results of the survey will be revealed in April's issue of SMU CIRCLE. Happy reading!
Best regards,
SMU Office of Alumni Relations

Inspired to Give
|
The culture of giving back and paying it forward has been deeply engrained into our SMU identity and values. It is thus always heartening to see alumni giving back to the university and community in myriad ways. Any form of contribution is invaluable and precious to us, be it gifting a donation in any form, being a mentor or alumni group leader, advocating for SMU at official events, providing jobs or internships to your SMU juniors, or simply helping out at a uni event for just one evening.
You see, giving back doesn't have to be grandiose; your time, effort, support, and heart go a very long way in impacting the SMU community, bolstering the SMU spirit, helping the university achieve its mission, and shaping the future of education.
In this issue, find out what motivated alumni Alvin Poh (BSc(ISM), 2010) and Jerry Lewis Ong (BSocSc, 2013) to contribute back to SMU and the community at large. If you are inspired by their stories and want to pay it forward in any manner or form, please write to us (alumni@smu.edu.sg). We could not be happier to see your love and pride for your alma mater.

spotlight on alumni entrepreneurs |
Alvin poh
(Bsc (isM), 2010)
CEO & CO-founder, vodien
|
Alvin Poh is not only a successful entrepreneur, he is someone with a big heart. Vodien -- Singapore's leading cloud hosting provider which Alvin founded -- merged with an Australian firm, Dreamscape, in July 2017 with a valuation of S$30 million. Despite this tremendous success, Alvin remains down-to-earth and humble. Most impressively, Alvin has given back to the SMU community, donating S$250,000 towards a scholarship supporting the SMU education of needy students. A scholarship recepient himself, impressed with the SMU pedagogy and deeply impacted by his experience at SMU, Alvin wants to pay it forward, with the hope that the next generation of alumni success stories would want to give back in future too. We at OAR could not be prouder of Alvin.

inspiring alumnus |
jerry lewis ong (Bsocsc, 2013)
co-founder of smu international development & community action (idca) ALUMNI GROUP
|
Jerry Lewis Ong (BSocSc, 2013) is not your average SMU graduate. Armed with multiple overseas conference and internship stints with global humanitarian organizations, such as United Nations agencies, it is evident that Jerry has been a man on a mission since his SMU undergrad days to improve the lives of those in need. Eschewing the typical path trodden by his peers, Jerry has instead pursued development work based on myriad social causes he holds dear. For his big heart, and for wanting to effect real change globally, it is no wonder that Jerry has made it to our list as one of SMU's Inspiring Alumni.
