Eligibility

Individuals who have completed and obtained a certificate from SMU Executive Development (ExD) programmes, having attended a minimum of five days or 30 equivalent hours of learning within a two-year period, as well as participants of selected corporate partnership programmes organised by SMU ExD.

The SMU Associate Alumni network brings together individuals who have participated in selected continuing education and professional development programmes offered by SMU. It reflects SMU’s commitment to lifelong learning and recognises the value of staying connected beyond formal degree programmes. Associate Alumni form part of a wider SMU community made up of learners, professionals, alumni, and partners who continue to engage with the University in meaningful ways. Through this network, Associate Alumni can stay connected with SMU, access selected benefits and opportunities, and contribute to a vibrant ecosystem that supports learning, collaboration, and shared growth across the University community.
Individuals who have participated in selected programmes of study offered by SMU’s continuing education programmes, such as SMU Executive Development, from April 2022 onwards, would qualify to be an Associate Alumnus.
Eligible individuals will receive an invitation from SMU Executive Development (ExD) after completing selected programmes. To register, simply follow the instructions in the invitation and submit the required details. Once your eligibility is verified, the Office of Alumni Relations will send you a welcome email to confirm your Associate Alumni status.

Whereas an SMU alumnus is one who has graduated from SMU with either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, an associate alumnus is one who has successfully completed a selected continuing education programme (Refer to item number 2).

Definition of “SMU alumni” and “SMU associate alumni”

Existing SMU alumni who also complete an ExD continuing education programme that qualifies them to be associate alumni will still be identified as “SMU alumni” as they have completed a full SMU degree.

An email confirming the success of the application to be an associate alumnus will be sent to the applicant, which serves as proof of one’s associate alumni status. Individuals are encouraged to either download a copy of the email or print it, and present it where necessary or required.
Engagement with SMU Associate Alumni is a shared effort across the University. The Office of Alumni Relations works closely with SMU’s continuing education and professional development units, as well as other partners across the University, to create opportunities for connection and engagement. Associate Alumni are also encouraged to connect with one another and take an active role in shaping the community. A strong network grows through shared participation, collaboration, and meaningful relationships.
