As an Alumni Mentor with a thriving career, you are the perfect person to help SMU students navigate their career options. 
STEP UP and share your knowledge with your juniors and help them make the transition from university to working life.

Share your expertise,  shape the future career of SMU students and gain a mutually beneficial experience. You will develop mentoring skills to enhance your personal and professional or benefit from reverse mentoring.

Objectives

  1. Provide SMU students with an opportunity to learn from alumni's experiences, insights, and knowledge
  2. Provide SMU students with guidance in defining their personal career and other developmental goals
  3. Provide alumni with a platform to reach their full potential by giving back and ‘paying it forward’ to the SMU community
  4. Encourage the development of a network of contacts within the SMU community (alumni and students)

As an Alumni-mentor, you can:

Programme

DurationFive months
FrequencyTwice a year (March – July, September – January)
Format
  • Matching of alumni mentors and student mentees will be done through OAR’s online Mentoring Portal.
  • Recommended contact time of 15 hours over the 5-month period (Virtual/physical meet-ups, email, phone etc) between alumni mentor and student mentee.
  • OAR will organise one Mentoring Evening to facilitate in-person meet-ups for mentor-mentee pairs.
  • Outside of the Mentoring Evenings, mentoring pairs are welcome to organise more meet-ups on their own.
Pre-requisites

ALUMNI MENTORS

  • Possess an intrinsic motivation in wanting to help nurture SMU undergraduate/postgraduate students.
  • Recommended to have at least one year of working experience.
  • Attend the Mentors' Welcome session.
  • Attend the Programme kick-off & Networking session.
  • Complete the Mid- & Post- Programme Survey (Online).

STUDENT MENTEES

  • Current SMU undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • New mentees are required to attend a compulsory 1‑hour Mentees’ Briefing.
  • Returning Mentees: Attendance at the mentee briefing is strongly encouraged.
  • Attend the Programme kick-off & Networking session.
  • Complete the Mid- & Post- Programme Survey (Online).
