SMU Peer Helpers are passionate undergraduates who care for their peers. They undergo rigorous training on helping skills in order to support counsellors from the Mrs Wong Kwok Leong Student Wellness Centre. They lend a listening ear and provide emotional support to their peers during times of need, and act as a bridge between the counsellors and the larger SMU community. Those who have graduated have expressed how the skills learnt have translated into useful tools at their workplace. Many continue to return to train their juniors. Their time spent peer helping has created strong bonds amongst them, and they have now decided to form the SMU Peer Helpers Alumni Group to strengthen connections for the longer term. The Group will be launched on 24th February 2017, becoming the 32nd Alumni Group to be formed. |
The marketing and communications functions have been undergoing vast transformations with the advent of digital technology, social media, and analytics. Marketing communications and technology have merged making it both challenging and exciting, and opening career pathways for many SMU alumni from different disciplines. Building a steady career and an influential network is easier with strong links with other alumni in the field. To bring like-minded alumni together to connect and share knowledge and experiences, we are proud to announce the formation of the Marketing and Communications Alumni Group. If you are in advertising, public relations, marketing, media, digital engineering and planning, and analytics, we welcome you to join the Group. It will give you access to a plethora of networking opportunities and keep you updated with industry intelligence. For young alumni, it will assist you in building a foundation for a career in marketing and communications. The 33rd Alumni Group will be launched on 30th March 2017. |
To serve the growing learning and training needs of alumni, OAR conducted a survey in late 2016 seeking inputs from our alumni. We hear you! In 2017, with your needs in mind, we have designed an enhanced Professional Development Series. Aside from existing offerings of professional development talks, workshops, and fireside chats, we are pleased to introduce SMU Academy’s wide array of courses focusing on financial services, technology & intelligent systems, human capital, management & leadership, etc. SMU Academy is a single and integrated entity serving as the face of SMU’s professional continuing education. Alumni will enjoy 30% off selected courses offered by the Academy. Starting from this issue, we have included a new column below dedicated to meeting your professional and career development needs. Find out how you can enrich yourself at courses conducted by your favourite professors, and talks by fellow alumni and other experts in the coming months. |

inspiring alumnus |
Ashley liew (bSocSc, 2012) |
"It is not always about the medals, but also the things you do in between." - Ashley Liew
When SMU alumnus Ashley Liew slowed down in the SEA Games marathon in 2015 to allow his fellow competitors who mistakenly took a wrong route to catch up, he did not expect that his “little” act would attract international recognition. Ashley became the first Singaporean to be awarded the Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy in 2016, in the "Act of Fair Play" category. Ashley attributed his success to the values inculcated whilst at SMU. He shares with us the lessons learnt in his life journey, his passion for chiropractic, and his motivation and inspiration for marathon running.
