Director's New Year Message 2020 Dear SMU Alumni, Best wishes for the new year and may 2020 usher a decade of countless blessings, fresh and exciting opportunities, enriching conversations and warm friendships, good health, and every success; to you and loved ones. 2020 promises to be a busy and exciting one at SMU as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. The university has lined up a series of activities and events to mark our second decade, beginning with Patron’s Day on 17 January. Do come by to SMU from around 4pm for performances, food, a makers market, and more. Campus Green will be buzzing with activity and it would be wonderful to have you join us. Come renew friendships and reignite your times at SMU on the day! Apart from Patron’s Day on 17 January, I would like to flag two other significant activities this year: 1. SMU Alumni Survey. We have engaged a market research company, Blackbox, to help us identify your needs with regard lifelong learning, personal, and professional development. We seek to remain relevant to you and aspire to be your partner as you journey in life. I look forward to your input on the survey as this will guide our decisions as we engage you better. Please do respond to Blackbox staff and their emails/messages, and give us your open and honest views (no…it is NOT a scam when they contact you!). 2. SMU Alumni Homecoming 2020. 20 years ago on 1st August, classes started at SMU for our pioneer batch of undergraduates. The day marked the start of our programmes that have since graduated many cohorts of students, including postgraduates, who are now our illustrious alumni. This year we will celebrate this milestone in our history at SMU Alumni Homecoming 2020. There will be a string of activities, performances, fun and games, and yes…food and drinks! Come by to look at a visual history of SMU, curated this year specially to capture our heritage and acknowledge our past. 3. SMU CIRCLE Refresh. This year, as we reflect on our past 20 years, OAR will be reviewing the notion of what it means to be an SMU alumnus or alumna. Part of this exercise will involve bringing in an agency to help us re-brand “SMU Alumni” as we seek to bring the faces and voices of our alumni to the fore. The agency will help us look at how we can sharpen our brand's value proposition and identity, and align our messaging and communications touchpoints among other things. This exercise will have an impact on SMU CIRCLE and as such we will take a pause from publishing the eNewsletter for at least four months. We look forward to presenting a refreshed SMU CIRCLE in June 2020. Meanwhile, we will still carry the stories and achievements of our alumni via other media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, so do "follow" us on these social platforms. I seek your understanding as we aim to improve SMU CIRCLE after rolling out 54 editions since August 2015. In order for us to keep you updated on the details of these and other activities this year, please update your profile with us to stay informed. I hope to see you at some of these events. Stay connected. Spread the word. My best regards to you and your loved ones. Dr Bervyn Lee |
