Parked under the umbrella arm of the Professional Development Series and catered particularly for alumni participating in the Alumni Mentoring Programme, the session on 6 September was aptly titled ‘Managing Self and Others’.
The first of a three-part series, 25 participants were brought through a fun and interactive session by Ms Ruth Chiang, Head of Corporate & Community Alignment at SMU's Centre for Management Practice.
Beginning with the end in mind, Ruth reiterated these objectives: So how different are you? What is your persona? What are you like really? What motivates you? Are you in the “flow”? What about the others around you? Do you understand them? How can you relate better with them?
Through the three-hour session, participants explored their various personas, all summed up in acronyms such as ISTP, ESTP, to name just two. Through group discussions, participants were able to identify their types and preferences beneath the skin, some surprising themselves even! With a better understanding of oneself, alumni can equip themselves not only to be a better mentor, but also as a colleague and a leader.
