- Message from the Director, Office of Alumni Relations -
I am excited to bring to you this edition as August is the time when we celebrate new beginnings, with the graduation of one cohort of students and the incoming of another. Congratulations to the Class of 2020, welcome to the alumni family, and all the very best for your future. To the Class of 2024, welcome!
We also celebrate the success of The Mentoring Circle (TMC), as it clinched gold in the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Awards. This is an affirmation of the vision of its founders and their good work that has benefited many. We also celebrate with Georgie Passalaris (MTSC 2015) in her appointment as Head, Impact Management and Measurement, for the Platform for Global Public Goods at the World Economic Forum (WEF).
This edition also shines the spotlight on alumni who have taken the extra step to look out for their juniors, offering them internships and guiding them in the corporate world, all in the SMU spirit of paying it forward.

SMU Strikes GOLD in the 2020 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards
The Mentoring Circle (TMC) by SMU was one of only two gold award recipients in the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Awards, under the category of Student-Led Engagement Initiatives. This is indeed an amazing feat considering that there were 2,752 entries submitted by 587 member institutions across 28 countries.
A ground-up initiative by students in 2016, TMC focuses on mentoring and networking as a way of helping SMU students develop their professional journey in the early days of their education. It is the brainchild of SMU alumni, Soon Zhengxiang (BSc (IS) 2017), Hafiz Kasman (BBM 2017), Masahiro Tan (BAcc 2017), and Benjamin Wong (BSc (Econ) 2018). The Office of Alumni Relations (OAR) is proud to have had the opportunity to work with TMC as part of the larger SMU Alumni Mentoring Programme. Check out the details of the award via this link.
OAR took the opportunity to discover more about the history of The Mentoring Circle with its founders.

SMU at UBS
For an organisation that employs about 3000 staff, 200 SMU alumni in UBS is but a drop in a pond. But while the number might be not be sizeable, the effort to engage the few individuals has been deliberate and purposeful, building a support system for cohorts of SMU alumni that join the financial institution.
