SMU alumna and swimmer Yip Pin Xiu's double-gold feat at the Tokyo Paralympics has roused pride in Singaporeans and stirred discussion on whether a Paralympic gold medal is worth the same as an Olympic one. They questioned why the cash payout for an athlete winning a gold medal at the Paralympics is $200,000, or one-fifth of the $1 million reward dangled for those at the Olympics. Pin Xiu's two triumphs in Tokyo took her tally to five since the Beijing Games in 2008. She said she was eager to discuss the topic even as she conceded there was a "conflict of interest" with her being a recipient of the payout. In any case, Pin Xiu, who served as a Nominated Member of Parliament from 2018 to 2020, has already made plans to give back. She has a goal to set up a swim school for able-bodied and disabled kids before she competes at the 2024 Paris Games.
