Four students from NUS and SMU had a mission when they developed an app to 'save' food waste from being discarded. The app named 'Makan Rescue' was launched on 15 February. So far, 6,500 people have downloaded the application, with 879 active users. Mr Ahmad Syafiq Bin Ruhazat shared that he and the other three students realised that Singapore was facing a problem on food wastage and decided to participate at the SG100 National Hack-A-Thon in July last year. After winning first prize at the Hack-A-Thon, they were inspired to make their idea a reality. The platform can be used by students from NUS, SMU and NTU to receive information on excess food at the institutions after downloading the app through Google Play or Apple App Store. "Recently, our app was used at a wedding reception," said SMU alumnus Mr Mohammad Hazmie Bin Ja’afar, who is now an IT auditor.
