SMU alumnus and NMP Mohd Irshad Abbas Ali called for a framework for a structured apprenticeship programme to be put together. Under the programme, students will undergo training which will allow them to earn a bachelor’s degree or an accredited industry qualification. Such a programme, as found in the United Kingdom and in Germany, will give students the opportunity to earn a salary whilst they acquire skills which are sought after by employers. This idea is however not new as there is currently the ITE which benefits both employers and students, giving students ITE credentials whilst getting practical experience. In addition, universities such as SMU and SUSS also offer work-student bachelor’s degree programmes. He suggested that one natural progression would be to take advantage of this existing framework and expand the work-study programmes in our education system.
