SMU said that for bursaries and need-based financial scholarships, over half of the donors are SMU alumni. Between 2016 and 2018, there was a 37% increase in the number of alumni donors. In 2018, 2,229 SMU students from low-income families received bursaries from the government, of which about 40% also received other financial aid. SMU President Professor Lily Kong said SMU is committed to ensuring that it maintains the accessibility of its university bursaries so that students from low-income families will get the help they require. The University will also further strengthen its fundraising efforts, with an aim to augment the overall resources available for needy students to tap on.
