SMU alumnus Alvin Poh became a millionaire after he and his partner sold their Web hosting company, Vodien Internet Solutions, for SGD30 million (RM90 million) to an Australian technology firm. As a way to show his gratitude, he gave SGD250,000 (RM750,000) to his alma mater SMU to start the Alvin Poh Scholarship, giving financial aid to needy undergraduates. He graduated from SMU with a bachelor’s degree in information systems and a master’s in information technology (e-business) from Carnegie Mellon University. According to him, he is grateful for the overseas experience that SMU gave him and that his education has taught him to think critically and develop problem-solving and other skills that helped him as an entrepreneur.

SMU alumnus Ivan Chang, co-founder of Wonderlabs, donated $50,000 to SMU last year and plans to give another $50,000 to help students go for overseas study missions. According to SMU, there was a 25% rise in the number of millennial alumni donors between 2016 and last year, and more than 25 of them gave five-figure or larger sums to the University between 2015 and last year. The largest gift from this group was a record $1 million, a joint donation made in 2015, which was used to set up the P.A.K Entrepreneurship Fund.
