Close to 90 participants joined us at the inaugural SMU Interaction Night for International Connections (ICON) Alumni and International Students on 25th August 2017 @ SMU Labs.
The SMU ICON oversees 12 cultural sub-clubs that promotes inclusion and integration within the campus community, celebrates cultural diversity, and provides support to all undergraduate international students. The club also caters to the needs of the international and exchange students and serves the entire student community by organising events and programmes to showcase the unique cultures and talents present in the diverse campus population.
Laughter and chatter filled the air as OAR’s Assistant Manager and emcee for the evening Vincent Tan welcomed the alumni and students to the event. A familiar face to the SMU family, OAR's Associate Director Andrew Tam shared with the audience the campus developments and introduced the team behind the inaugural ICON Interaction Night.
SMU Alumni Association's Assistant Marketing Manager Fyn Wu shared with the audience the benefits and privileges of the Association’s membership. Current SMU ICON President took the stage next and updated alumni of the recent developments in the international scene in SMU.
Following that, the alumni and students broke up into groups and connected with one another over games and a campus tour. The alumni had an opportunity to visit the newly-renovated buildings and facilities, such as the School of Law building & the Kwa Geok Choo Library. As the event was held during the week of the Singapore Night Festival, the precinct surrounding the SMU Campus was filled with cultural performances, art installations and bustling with festivities and celebrations.
After the campus tour where OAR would like to thank SMU ICON and DII for their strong support in the organisation of the successful event.
The SMU Interaction Night series was designed to facilitate meaningful interactions between alumni and students and is aligned with SMU’s 2025 vision of building a deeper engagement among students and alumni. The fundamental belief that bonds forged during student experience in SMU are enduring forms the basis of these SMU Interaction Nights.
This event is jointly organised by the Office of Alumni Relations (OAR), SMU ICON, and the Diversity, Inclusion and Integration (DII) Team (former International Students Experience @ SMU’s Office of Global Learning).
