FLIPPING THROUGH THE “PAGES” OF SMU’s ARTS SCENE
About 170 alumni, students and guests took time out of their busy schedules to witness yet another breakthrough in the University’s art scene at the annual SMU Arts Festival Opening Ceremony Performance on Friday, 8 September 2017.
Entitled “Elements@SMU”, the opening ceremony was intricately choreographed to reframe the performance space at SMU Campus Green, through use of urban dance, music and sets. The segment was based on the Greeks’ belief that the world was made up of nature’s elements of air, water, earth and fire, and they remain prevalent and are inscribed into the modern urban space.
Alumni who returned to view the opening show were in wonderment of the various art elements.
“The performances truly reflect and express the heart and soul of the University and the arts scene,” said an alumnus from the SMU Eluminix (Alumni Group). “Tonight’s opening ceremony reflects another level of breakthrough in the University’s art scene.”
Thereafter, the crowd met together at SMU Alumni Bistro, B3 by SMUAA, for a time of food and drinks. The event was fully hosted by our current SMU Arts & Cultural Fraternity (ACF) Executive Committee members, who stepped up to interact, host and attend to all our alumni returning that evening.
To coincide with the SMU Arts Festival’s theme, Pages, the night celebrated the “pages” (successes) of our three current vibrant arts-based alumni groups, namely the SMU Eluminix, SMU Ballare Alumni Group, and the SMU City Samba Alumni Group. The spokespeople of each group agreed that apart from the common interest of the performing arts, it is the strong bonds and relationships forged that essentially brings a sense of fulfillment and belonging to the University.
