Over 50 School of Accountancy (SOA) alumni came back to SMU on 15 January 2016 for the annual ASOC AlumNight which was held at SMU Labs. Organised by the Accounting Society Management Committee (ASOC MC) with support from Office of Alumni Relations (OAR) the networking event allowed SOA alumni to share their valuable working experiences with the students and provide them guidance in applying for internships or choosing their future careers. Of course it was also an opportunity to catch up with old friends and have a drink or two with the faculty.
Opening addresses from Prof Cheng Qiang, Dean (SOA) and Assoc. Prof Low Aik Meng, Director (OAR) was followed by sharing sessions by Mr Lucas Lam from CPA Australia and SOA alumnus, Mr Desmond Lim (BAcc, Class of 2010). The participants soon launched into a facilitated group discussion which allowed our alumni to interact with our students and help them gain a better understanding of the job scopes in the various sectors they can possibly venture into. This was followed up with an informal networking session which gave our students a chance to mingle freely with their seniors over dinner and drinks and find out what drives them to their success.
In a nutshell, AlumNight 2016 was a roaring success for ASOC, SOA as well as OAR. It was a great start to 2016 and we were all heartened to see so many alumni returning to take this opportunity and impart invaluable advice to their juniors.
We hope to see everyone (and perhaps more of you) back again next year!
