SMU alumus Onn Tian Sern was one of only two Singaporeans to receive the Queen’s Young Leader Award this year. The award recognises and celebrates exceptional youths from across the Commonwealth who take the lead in their communities and use their skills to transform lives. While in his second year in SMU studying for a sociology degree, he realised that he could use technology to help others with mental health issues. Mr Oon shared his inspiring story of how through the help and support of SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology Hiro Saito, his Global and Transnational Sociology lecturer, he was able to overcome his fears to set up Acceset, a portal that allows people to discuss mental health issues and seek help anonymously.
