About 117 alumni, students and staff attended the SMU Interaction Night for SMU Sports Union (SSU) on 17th August 2017 at University Lounge.
As one of the biggest Constituent Bodies (CBds) among SMU's co-curricular clubs, the event saw generations of alumni who once participated in numerous land and sea sports coming together to celebrate the University's sportsmanship and their love for sports.
Director of Office of Alumni Relations (OAR) Associate Professor Low Aik Meng welcomed the crowd and encouraged everyone to stay connected with one another and with their alma mater. For this purpose, he called for volunteers amongst the audience to start a SSU Alumni Group. The SMU Alumni Groups are niche communities for alumni formed under the SMU Alumni Association (SMUAA) and supported by OAR. With funding to organise at least two engagement events per year, these groups serve as a platform for like-minded alumni to come together personally and professionally.
“I can see from the enthusiasm of those here tonight that sports in SMU is not dead. In fact I am heartened and delighted to know that 21 SMU alumni and students would be participating in the 29th SEA Games. We at SMU are proud of them and give them our utmost support,” said A/Prof Low.
Assistant Marketing Manager from SMUAA Fyn Wu took the stage next and introduced the alumni benefits and privileges of the Association’s membership.
President of the 13th SSU Management Committee, Mr Duncan Koh, addressed the crowd and revealed his hopes that all clubs stay in contact with their alumni after graduation.
There is no better way to keep in touch with SMU other than through sports," said Duncan, a current Year 3 student in the School of Economics.
SMU Ultimate Club’s Vice President Kevin Heng also shared on the clubs’ latest and upcoming tournaments and activities.
The alumni continued to enjoy themselves throughout the night over games of Foosball and Beer Pong Challenges. Three lucky winners walked home with lucky draw prizes at the end of the night.
The SMU Interaction Night for SSU alumni and students was the third annual event after the inaugural session in 2015.
