Over 70 alumni and their families, faculty and staff attended the Class of 2006 10th Year Reunion on 19th November 2016. Held at the University Lounge, the venue was transformed to a mini carnival with bouncy castles, face painting, balloon sculpting, cartoon caricature and clay making. Kids were entertained as their parents and fellow alumni reconnected with one another and rekindled old friendships.
10 years have passed since the Class of 2006 graduated from the University. As one of the pioneering cohorts, this group of graduates attended classes held at Bukit Timah campus and the current city campus. Class of 2006 alum Faizal Amir welcomed and entertained the crowd with a pop quiz that got the alumni reminiscing about their student days in SMU. Questions like “What was the song played every day when the SMU Library was about to close?” (Closing Time by Semisonic) and “Who served as SMU Presidents during our time in the University? (Professor Ronald Frank and Professor Howard O. Hunter) brought about smiles and laughter as the audience shouted out the answers.
“I really appreciate the effort the Office of Alumni Relations is putting in to make reunions easy for parents like myself. My kids totally enjoyed themselves while allowing me some time to reminisce the time I spent in school. The event also allowed me to introduce my alma mater to my kids, who might one day follow the SMU tradition! Well done! Looking forward to my next alumni event!” Lester Lim (MAF, 2006).
Director of SMU’s Office of Alumni Relations Professor Low Aik Meng addressed the alumni as he recognised familiar faces in the audience. He encouraged everyone to stay connected and spread the word by bringing more of their fellow classmates back to SMU. A photo montage of events from 2002 to 2006 such as Freshmen Orientation Camp, Convocation, Patron’s Day, Farewell to Bukit Timah Campus and Commencement was shown. After the official programme ended, the alumni continued their conversations as they enjoyed food and drinks, and captured memories in photo printouts at the photo booth.
