The SMU Industry Night for Accounting, Audit, Tax and Consulting on 21st July saw a turn-out of over 130 alumni and industry partners. Held at Angie’s Oyster Bar on the 45th floor of the Singapore Land Tower, alumni networked with each other over food and drinks, amidst resplendent views of Singapore’s city scape.
The Guest-of-Honour, Professor Cheng Qiang, Dean of Accountancy, opened the event and warmly welcomed back alumni, from both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Professor Cheng updated alumni and industry partners on developments in the School of Accountancy, allowing all to keep abreast of SMU’s continued focus and rigour in developing students for the marketplace. Faculty from the School of Accountancy - Prof Sum Yee Loong, Assoc Prof Wang Jiwei, Assoc Prof Gary Pan, Assoc Prof Goh Beng Wee and Assoc Prof Seow Poh Sun, were also present to lend their strong support and to reconnect with their former students.
In his address, Assoc Prof Low Aik Meng, Director of the Office of Alumni Relations, reiterated the need for alumni in the marketplace to stay connected to SMU. Through the Industry Night Series, OAR aspires to draw alumni industry professionals together for tighter networking and sharing of ideas. Assoc Prof Low thanked the hiring managers from our industry partners BDO, Ernst & Young, KornFerry PKF-CAP and Pricewaterhouse Coopers, for joining us that evening.
Emcee for the night, SMU Alumni Association (SMUAA) Executive Committee member Ford Lai (BBM, 2007) introduced the many avenues that alumni can connect with one another and with the University highlighting the upcoming events. In the lucky draw for the evening, two alumni each won a complimentary one year SMUAA membership and a bottle of wine.
James Yeo (BAcc, 2012) (pictured above second from right) said, ““I am not a stranger to events organised by the Office of Alumni Relations having attended the launch of the SMU alumni café and talks under the Alumni Professional Development Series. These events provided avenues for me to keep in contact with my ex-classmates. The SMU Industry Night is a beneficial platform to meet and network with industry professionals and expand my contacts”
With two more industry nights planned till the end of the year, alumni can look forward meeting more industry professionals and widening career networks. The next Industry Night for alumni professionals in the Technology sector will be on 22nd September 2016. The Industry Night on Media and Marketing will take place on 27th October 2016.
