Make Every Day Earth Day

Earth Day - Make Every Day Earth Day

Earth Day is a time to celebrate the earth and all that it sustains, to be aware of our habits and to rally support for those who, like us, are dedicated to preserving it.

Adopting sustainable habits, such as buying products with sustainable packaging, shopping for vegan-friendly products, and choosing products that use natural ingredients are ways we can start to celebrate Earth Day. Here are 3 ways to be eco-friendly in your everyday life with our alumni-owned businesses.

THE SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT

Thinking of adopting a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle but do not know where to start? Visit The Sustainability Project (TSP), a Singapore-based eco-friendly ecommerce platform founded in 2018 by SMU graduate, Joline Tang (BAcc 2018).

Inspired by Lauren Singer, the zero-waste guru of Trash is for Tossers, Joline turned her personal blog into TSP to spread the green message, promote green practices and sell green products. Through TSP’s 3 arms – Educate, Transform, and Inspire, find tips on how to lead a sustainable lifestyle, shop for high quality sustainable products at affordable prices and attend sustainability-focused workshops to learn how to incorporate sustainability into your life.

BUBBLES N SCRUBS

What was meant to be a bonding activity for the family to unwind during the COVID-19 pandemic while creating alternative bath and body solutions for their child who has sensitive skin, ended up becoming a family business for SMU graduate, Chloe Then (BBM 2010).

Set up in 2000, Bubbles n Scrubs is a local homegrown brand that specialises in handcrafted natural bath and body aromatherapy products. Using only natural botanical ingredients and plant-based essential oils, every product is handmade with sustainability in mind. Bubbles and Scrubs’ eco efforts include the use of plastic-free packaging and selling freshly crafted products on demand to reduce product waste.

BETH

Another bathroom tip that is good for the environment as well as for your hair is shampoo bars. According to Singapore-based start-up Beth, you can reduce your carbon footprint from shampooing by up to 92% with a single 100g shampoo bar. Lasting between 160 to 200 washes per bar, this saves you the need to buy three 250ml bottles of regular shampoo.

Conceived out of a desire to introduce more sustainable haircare alternatives in a plastic-heavy industry, SMU graduate Elizabeth Wong (BBM 2019) started Beth with one purpose, to show the benefits and sustainability impact when one switches from liquid to solid haircare products. Today, Beth sells soap-free, cruelty-free, vegan, zero-waste solid shampoo bars that are free of sulphates, parabens, and silicones and packaged without using plastic.
