GLOBAL EXPOSURE
|
SMU Provost and President-designate Professor Lily Kong recently announced in end-March 2018 the university's commitment in increasing opportunities and support for SMU graduates to enter the workforce with overseas experience, due to the strong competitive edge gained from global exposure.
We at the Office of Alumni Relations could not agree more. Internationalization experience gleaned from exchange programmes, overseas internships, overseas community service projects, study missions, cultural immersions, overseas SMU-X projects, CCA-related activities etc. indubitably (and indelibly) shapes a person's character, viewpoints, mission, and path in life. Professor Kong articulates this best that an education with overseas experience will "develop our students into well-rounded and confident young men and women with a global vision, and whose contributions will make a meaningful impact in society."
In our April issue, find out how global exposure played a part in enabling alumni entrepreneurs Chia Luck Yong and Adrian Lim (both BSc(ISM), 2013) to decide to start their company in Vietnam, as well as inspiring alumna Anju Bhatia (IE-SMU MBA, 2017) to make meaningful impact in society, no matter where she lives.

Chia Luck Yong & Adrian Lim
(Bsc (isM), 2013)
CO-founders,
fetch technology
|
Chia Luck Yong and Adrian Lim were both bitten by the entrepreurship bug as undergraduates at SMU, leading them to co-found Fetch Technology (FETCH), a company that connects world class software developers to tech firms in Singapore and around the region. The catch is that their company is based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; this interest in Vietnam was sparked during their Technopreneurship Study Mission to - you guessed it - Vietnam itself in 2012. Read on regarding their journey in starting their company!

Chia Luck Yong (BSc (ISM), 2013, above left) and Adrian Lim (BSc (ISM), 2013, above right) started Fetch Technology in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. A Technopreneur Study Mission to Vietnam shaped their current path in life, and it comes as no surprise that they are firm proponents of global exposure in a student's academic life.

Anju Bhatia (IE-SMU MBA, 2017) has lived a life less ordinary. By her own admission, she has "moved sixteen times and lived in four countries". A woman of the world, she has worked in the banking industry, seen extreme poverty, actively aided the sick, the underpriviledged, downtrodden, marginalized communities through myriad charities or projects she initiated on her own, embarked on an MBA, and juggles the demands of motherhood on top of everything. Learn more about this inspiring international alumna who strives to better the lives of others, as well as wanting to learn and expose herself to new things, cultures and knowledge, no matter which part of the world she is in.
