SMU CIRCLE - November 2017

SMU alumni

SPOTLIGHT ON Alumni mentoring programme SPOTLIGHT ON
THE alcove

The SMU Alumni Mentoring Programme was launched on 31 October 2017, with over 130 alumni mentors and 180 student mentees who have signed up for this programme.

The mentors and mentees mingled and made connections with each other across the following broad categories such as Technology, Banking & Finance, Public Sector, Media & Marketing, and Services & Other Sectors.

The Office of Alumni Relations thank the alumni mentors for volunteering of their precious time, and 'paying it forward' to their juinors!

Interested alumni or students may still sign up for the programme; the deadline has been extended till 25 Nov 2017.

The ALcove, your new event space, is now open for bookings! Located at SIS's basement concourse, The ALcove is the only event space in SMU that comes fully equipped with catering, projector and sound systems, a pool table and dart machines. With a capacity of 120 pax, The ALcove is  perfect for workshops, panel discussions, gatherings, and celebrations.

The ALcove is an alumni space managed by the SMU Alumni Association on behalf of the Office of Alumni Relations. All SMU alumni, students and staff are welcome to utilise The ALcove for your club activities or office events.

spotlight on alumni entrepreneurs

(bbm, 2009)

yardstick coffee

Hailing from The Philippines, alumnus Kevin Tang (BBM, 2009) spent four years of his university life at SMU, a decision he never regretted. Being in Singapore exposed him to the local coffee culture, leading him to start Yardstick Coffee with two other SMU alumni in Manila. Currently the President of The Philippines Alumni Chapter (an overseas alumni group for all SMU alumni living in The Philippines), he generously provided all the coffees for the SMU Industry Leaders Dialogue event in Manila in October 2017.

VAnessa paranjothy (bsocsc, 2012)

co-founder, freedom cups

Recently named as one of 2017 Forbes Asia’s 30 under 30, Vanessa Paranjothy (BSocSc, 2012) deserves every accolade thrown at her. Taking the path less trodden, Vanessa has ventured into a fairly taboo space of menstruation and periods; Freedom Cups is a ‘feminine hygiene’ start-up that creates reusable, silicon menstrual cups. For every cup purchased, Vanessa will donate one to women in underprivileged communities, perfect for women in areas where there are no toilets, running water or electricity. Whilst she is loath to name her company a social enterprise, this is an entrepreneur with a big heart and an even bigger desire to improve the lives of impoverished women. Is it a wonder that this 28-year-old is one of Forbes Asia’s 30 under 30?
